Graffiti in St Leonard's

Animal head graffito in St Leonards churchSt Leonard's church features a large amount of graffiti on the stonework, much of which is of historical interest.

There are lots of ritual protection marks and apotropaic marks (sometimes known as "witches' marks"), some charming animals (and humans!), and several examples of ships and boats.

Local historian Anne Petrie and the Hythe Local History Society have done a wonderful job of cataloguing all the graffiti they've found so far, and you can find their documentation on the website of the Hythe Local History Group (follow the link to "Church").
